Homogenisation

The difference between homogenisation and stirring is often misunderstood.

Stirring is generally used for low viscosity samples (like water), when solids are to be distributed within a liquid or liquids are to be mixed. Stirring is done at relatively low speed and does not impact or change the nature of the sample by itself.

Homogenisation happens at much higher rotor speed. It is generally used to reduce material size (e.g. cut plant samples into a solvent for analysis) or to mix liquids with limited solubility (liquids that do not normally mix well) such as oil-in-water or two different oils, for example cannabis extract oil into MCT. Homogenisation can generate emulsions and ensures best possible product uniformity – ensuring accurate dosing.

Kinematica offers a range of Swiss made homogenisation solutions covering small volume R&D, scale up and pharmaceutical production. Production tools are cGMP compliant and suitable for sterile environments.

POLYTRON® - PT 2500 E Stand Dispersion Unit (Ecoline)

The PT2500 E is the ideal solution for cost-conscious laboratories. It is able to perform homogenizations with volumes from 0.05 to 2500 ml. The electronic control system continuously monitors the speed and automatically adjusts it, keeping it constant with changing viscosity. The speed is easily seen on the large digital display.

Aggregates with a variety of styles and diameters are available to provide optimum particle size reduction when using this drive. There are many different styles of aggregates available from 3mm in diameter for volumes down to 0.01 mL to 12mm for volumes up to 250mL. If cross contamination from sample to sample is a concern, we offer single use synthetic aggregates in 7 and 12 mm diameters. One of the more recent additions to our line is the PT-DA 20/2 X EC aggregate which was specifically designed for homogenizing tablets.

Highlights

  • Filling volumes 0.05 ml to 2.5 l
  • Laboratory instrument for budget conscious users
  • Sample operation with on/off and speed control
  • Intelligent variable speed control to protect the motor for the longest period of time
  • Leading speed stability even with changing viscosity
